Movement-Based Ensemble Building and Choreography

Kira Rockwell's oh, to be pure again is a visceral ode to female desire, submission, rebellion, and growing up in a religious culture that's obsessed with purity. It was of the utmost importance to me that we captured the sticky, sweaty, magical, sleep-deprived and mosquito-bitten camp setting that acts as a backdrop for hundreds of Texas campers' summers every year.

I led a rehearsal process that had a heavy emphasis on movement exercises drawn from Grotowski, Laban, and The Viewpoints that included the entire cast from day one, working towards cohesion in the ensemble, a fun line dancing sequence, a worshipful 'holy spirit fire session', and an ensemble-devised challenge ropes course where we had actors lifting and climbing across set pieces and one another.
